Happy Crabber Inlet Adventure Trolling & Bottom Fishing Light Tackle

The Happy Crabber

Take a calm water, family oriented crabbing and fishing trip out of Hatteras Village! We will start the trip pulling blue crab traps from the calm waters of the Pamlico Sound, shaking out the crabs, rebaiting the traps, and going through the catch picking out and measuring the keepable crabs and returning the smaller ones safely back to the water. The second part of the adventure will be either bottom fishing or trolling for bluefish, spanish mackerel, flounder, and more— and the whole catch is yours to keep! This is a good, kid friendly trip where no one gets “sea sick” and includes educational moments to learn about how fish and shellfish are harvested and processed in the commercial fishing industry.

This trip encompasses several different types of fishing, depending on the weather and water conditions on the day of your trip. We do some light tackle wreckfishing for species like sea bass and triggerfish. We also may troll for spanish mackerel, king mackerel, or bluefish. When conditions are right, we also do a lot of sight casting for cobia and red drum and have the option of drifting the backwaters of the sound where the water is often calm.

Trolling & Bottom Fishing

These popular bluewater trolling and bottom fishing combo trips focus on fishing for whatever is biting the best in the area when we go out. We’ll start by pulling high speed baits for wahoo and dolphin (mahi-mahi) on the way out to where we bottom fish and troll. We try to split the trip up and spend part of the time bottom fishing and then switch to trolling to give you the ability to catch as many fish as possible based on what is biting that day, taking weather conditions into consideration.

Species to Watch For: Wahoo, Dolphin (Mahi-Mahi), Tilefish, Triggerfish, Sea Bass, King Mackerel

Where We Fish: Atlantic Ocean

Trip Availability: April, May, June, July, October, November

This is a great, slow paced off-season trip that primarily focuses on catching bait fish and red drum using light tackle. We can also do some ocean fishing if the conditions are favorable.
